Read moreOf the Top 10 best-selling trucks and SUVs in the country last year, six out of the ten are compact SUVs. This is but a snapshot of how important vehicles in this segment are as these six represent about a third of all of the SUVs currently on offer in the category. The Honda CR-V has been a best-seller since its introduction over 20 years ago while the Tiguan has become a volume leader for Volkswagen.
Despite their differing roots, both of these small SUVs are designed to cater to Canadian family needs through a slew of new technologies, safety features, efficient performance and, importantly, space and comfort. On that subject, the more compact-looking 2020 Honda CR-V is far more spacious than meets the eye.
Although its wheelbase is shorter than the Volkswagen’s, the Honda’s trunk capacity is rated at an impressive 1,110 litres whereas the Tiguan delivers 1,065 liters. Same goes for maximum cargo space – the CR-V best the Tiguan with 2,146 liters compared to 2,081 liters. Seating and room for five occupants is generous for all onboard. Now, although the Tiguan can be equipped with an optional 3rd row of seats, it is reserved for children.
On the powertrain front, the Honda CR-V’s engine is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder unit which delivers a generous 190-horsepower and 179 lb.-ft. of torque. The Volkswagen Tiguan gets 184-horsepower and 221 lb.-ft. of torque from its turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder. Transmission-wise, the Honda has a smooth-operating continuously variable transmission (CVT) while the Volkswagen is delivered with an 8-speed automatic. Combined average fuel consumption for both is of 8.1L/100km with the optional AWD system. Unlike any other car manufacturer in Canada, Honda discloses the amount of CO2 emissions their vehicles produce. With AWD, the CR-V’s carbon footprint is of 189g/km.
Of the many features available in both SUVs, look for standard 7-inch (6.5-inches in the VW) touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a number of other infotainment technologies. The Honda CR-V takes the lead in standard safety equipment with adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist.
Finally, Honda products are renowned for their durability, reliability and cost-efficient ownership experience. Come and see the new 2020 Honda CR-V and discover why it’s a best-seller.
