2020 Honda CR-V vs 2020 Mazda CX-5

2020 Honda CR-V vs 2020 Mazda CX-5

The compact sport utility vehicle battle will continue this winter with the arrival of new 2020 models like the 2020 Honda CR-V and the 2020 Mazda CX-5. While the CR-V receives a host of visual improvements that give Honda's new compact SUV an even sportier look, the Mazda CX-5 is virtually unchanged.

It therefore will continue to provide its owners with fun driving dynamics and a nice-looking interior but will struggle to compete with the Honda CR-V in terms of interior space, and even fuel economy. Both of these compact SUVs have a lot to offer, but the CR-V has remained year after year one of the best-selling vehicles in Canada because it provides everything buyers want out of an SUV without sacrificing comfort and fuel economy.

The 2020 Honda CR-V a little more powerful than the 2020 Mazda CX-5

The 2020 Honda CR-V returns with the same 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder engine that powered the 2019 model. Developing 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque, this engine offers more horsepower than the base engine in the 2020 CX-5 that develops 186 horsepower. With an average fuel consumption rating of only 8.1 liters per 100 kilometers, the 2020 Honda CR-V is also the most fuel-efficient compact SUV by far in its class. Despite being more powerful than the 2020 Mazda CX-5, it finds a way to be more efficient by about 1.0 liter per 100 kilometers.

The 2020 Honda CR-V is also much more spacious than the new 2020 Mazda CX-5 with 1,110 liters of trunk space versus 875 liters for the Mazda. The difference is significant, and you will notice it every day. We buy a compact SUV for the space it provides and at this level, it's hard to beat the Honda CR-V. The Mazda CX-5 has many qualities, but it cannot compete with the Honda in terms of versatility.
